About our research
REACH intersects statistics, stakeholder involvement and engagement and psychology to produce creative solutions to improve the way we do and use statistics.
Projects within REACH vary from investigating the best way to ask patients and the public about statistics so we can inform the design, conduct and interpretation of health research and clinical trials to testing the effectiveness of using data to inform clinical decision making. Ultimately, REACH wants to ensure health research is for and by everyone.

-
PINpoINT
This project develops methods to improve patient and public involvement in defining target differences in clinical trials.
It includes exploring prioritisation and acceptability of available methods to elicit meaningful or clinically important differences; developing a framework to include patient’s voices in discussions around target differences; and piloting the processes to assess feasibility in practice.
Funded by the UKRI/NIHR Better Methods, Better Research (NIRG).
-
TiPTAP
This project evaluates a data-focused intervention with or without training, known as audit and feedback. Audit and feedback provides personalised performance feedback to healthcare professionals usually alongside a comparator.
TiPTAP is a national randomised controlled trial funded by NHS Scotland. It aims to improve antibiotic prescribing in primary care dental practices.

Stats that Speak
This project explored the use of creative workshops to improve communication and shared understanding of treatment important differences—a key statistical concept in clinical trials—among public partners, statisticians, and creative professionals.
The workshops supported inclusive knowledge exchange and led to the co-creation of engaging communication tools (e.g. a song, game, and cartoon), with participants recommending the approach for explaining other complex research concepts.
Funded by the Wellcome Trust and the UKRI/NIHR Better Methods, Better Research (NIRG).
